What Is Self-Leveling Concrete?
The material, usually called self-leveling compound, is a cement based mix with polymer additives that let it flow like thick pancake batter. Pour it onto a slab and it spreads on its own, finding a flat plane instead of sitting in whatever shape the substrate happens to be. That property is what makes concrete floor leveling so useful before tile, hardwood, vinyl or epoxy goes down, since almost every flooring manufacturer requires a flat substrate for their warranty to hold.
Traditional floor screed is mixed stiffer and has to be troweled by hand to a slope or level line, which takes real skill and more time. Self-leveling compound skips most of that labor because gravity and the mix design do the work. For large rooms or floors with several low spots, that difference in speed and consistency is the whole reason contractors reach for it.
When Does a Floor Actually Need Leveling?
Not every floor needs this treatment, and a good contractor will tell you that upfront instead of selling you a pour you do not need. A few signs point to a real problem worth fixing before new flooring goes in.
A carpenter's level or a straightedge rocks visibly when you set it on the floor. Doors drag or stick on one side of the frame but swing free on the other. Tiles have cracked in a line, which usually means the slab is moving or dipping underneath them. Furniture or appliances need shims to sit level. Water pools in one corner of a bathroom or laundry room instead of draining evenly.

Step 1: Inspection and Assessment
Every job starts with a walkthrough, not a quote pulled from a phone call. We check the slab for cracks, measure how far out of level the room actually is with a laser, and test for moisture, since a wet substrate will ruin a pour no matter how carefully it is mixed.
This step also decides how much floor preparation the room needs. A slab with minor dips might only need grinding and a single pour. One with old adhesive, uneven patches, or a moisture problem needs more work before the self-leveling compound ever goes down. Step 2: Diamond Grinding and Surface Preparation
Once we know what we are working with, the grinding starts. A walk-behind diamond grinder strips off old coatings, glue residue, paint, and the thin weak layer of cement at the very top of the slab, known in the trade as laitance. None of that bonds well with a fresh pour, so it has to go first. Grinding is only one piece of what goes into concrete floor preparation, alongside crack repair and moisture control before the compound ever gets mixed.
Grinding also opens up the pores of the concrete, giving the primer something to grip in the next step. Step 3: Primer Application
A ground slab still needs a primer coat before the pour. Primer seals the surface, controls how fast the concrete underneath pulls moisture out of the self-leveling compound, and gives the pour something consistent to bond to across the whole floor.
We match the primer to the manufacturer of the compound we are pouring, since mixing brands or skipping this step is one of the most common reasons a self-leveling floor fails later, cracking, bubbling, or peeling away from the slab in patches. Primer typically needs an hour or two to dry before the crew can move to the pour, so this step sets the pace for the rest of the day.
Step 4: Mixing and Pouring the Compound
This is the part most people picture when they hear self-leveling concrete: bags of dry compound mixed with water in a drill mounted paddle mixer until it reaches the consistency of thick batter, then poured across the primed slab in sections.
As soon as it hits the floor, the crew works fast with a gauge rake and a spiked roller. The rake spreads the pour to a consistent depth, and the spiked roller pops air bubbles that would otherwise dry into pinholes on the surface. The compound keeps flowing and settling on its own for a short window after that, which is where the name comes from; a good pour looks glassy and dead flat once it stops moving.
Timing matters here more than almost anywhere else in the job. Each batch has a working window before it starts to set, so a large room usually gets poured in sections, with control joints or careful feathering between them so the seams disappear once it cures.
Curing Time and What Comes Next
Most self-leveling compounds are firm enough to walk on within four to six hours, though we still keep foot traffic light during that window. Light use, like moving in furniture pads or setting up tools, is typically fine after 24 hours.
Flooring installation is a different question. Tile, hardwood, vinyl, and epoxy all need the pour fully cured before installation starts, which usually means waiting 48 to 72 hours depending on the product, the room's temperature, and humidity. Pouring in a heated, dry space cures faster than a cold garage or a job in the middle of a Vancouver winter.
